Managing Acid Reflux Part 2

Managing Acid Reflux Part 1, discussed my lifestyle modification to be able to cope with my illness. This article will focus on the food that I veered away from when I was on a strict diet to heal my body from a bad case of acid reflux (GERD).

My doctor once said that acid reflux is like body odor – it cannot be cured overnight. It requires discipline and patience. It’s true, a month or more of expensive medication does not assure that you’ll be free from acid reflux as this ailment requires a change in lifestyle.

Food which can contribute to heartburn:

  1. Sweet potato (camote)
  2. Cabbage
  3. Beans and beansprout (monggo and togue)
  4. String beans (sitaw)
  5. Gumbo (okra)
  6. Caffeine containing food and drinks: coffee, chocolate, cola, tea (except chamomile)
  7. Fatty meals
  8. Alcohol
  9. Cigarette
  10. Spicy food
  11. Peppermint and spearmint
  12. Tomato and tomato based dishes
  13. Onions
  14. Milk
  15. Dairy products (except yogurt)

From time to time, I indulge on the food in the list — who can resist a decadent chocolate dessert? The key is in taking these in moderation and listening to your body. If you are experiencing gas pain, hyperacidity or can taste chyme on your throat, then choose to be kind to your body.
