I accepted that even if I find them very adorable, I will never be part of the “Despicable Me & Minions Craze” because (1) McDonalds branches in prime locations (usually in business districts and near schools) ran out of minions. (2) Eating 8 Happy Meals is not a brilliant idea because I am on a strict meal plan. (3)They are cute and nice to look at but I do not know where to display them. (Our “shoe box” space does not have room for those and even if I insist, most probably it will be classified as clutter in weeks time and will be placed inside our ottoman cum storage box and be put to sleep.)
One fine Saturday evening, out of sheer luck; my friends and I had an opportunity to have a photo taken with a life size Gru and his 1 foot tall talking minions. How did that happen?
For some crazy reason, all our restaurant of choice in Rockwell mall were closed. Due to frustration and eagerness to find a place to sit and rest, we decided to have dinner at the nearest restaurant where we are standing — Pancake House. Upon entering the restaurant our heads suddenly turned to the right as if our names are being called (most probably because on our peripheral vision is an image of three 1 foot tall minions standing on the dining table). Then we noticed that it was owned by a man who is smiling widely at us because we can’t stop ogling at his toys. To let go of the awkwardness, we followed the waiter as he lead us to our table. While we are busy chatting, laughing and choosing our food the best thing happened. The owner of the minions stood up, wore a striped gray scarf and a mask — he is imitating Gru.
I immediately invited my girlfriends to have our photo taken with Gru and his minions. After our picture was taken, I made small talk and asked why he is wearing a costume and brought his props (I was thinking that maybe there is a Despicable Me exhibit or event in the mall at that moment). Apparently, it is because the movie is currently showing and he is a fan (Yes, that simple.). :) I guess, being in character makes him feel delighted.
Just a bit of information, we were told by the waiters that he is a loyal customer of the restaurant. Who knows you might be able to catch him there. :) Awesome, isn’t it?
